While there are, of course, exceptions to this rule (nobody’s going to think it’s rude if you stay seated if you have mobility issues, for example), generally speaking, if you’re being introduced to someone, etiquette dictates that you stand.

Though Tsai says that women used to be expected to remain seated during introductions, today, standing is considered good practice, regardless of gender. “When you stand to greet someone, it not only shows that you are eager to meet and welcome them,” it’s also an easy way to convey respect, she explains.
