But in reality, a huge percentage of Americans are happy to remain right where they are. One AARP survey found that around 90 percent of people 60 and older want to stay in their current homes for the next five to 10 years.

Reasons for staying close to home include:

Liking their current home as is: 85 percent
Wanting to remain close to family and friends: 66 percent
Avoiding the hassle of moving: 50 percent
