21. “The subway broke down”

We know when this sentence is true by how truly exasperated you are. If it really, really broke down, you won’t stop talking about it. But, like the traffic lie, blaming the subway is a convenient way to cover for your scheduling screw up.

It also has the benefit of giving the person you’re offering the excuse to something they can commiserate with you about. Instead of giving you a dirty look for being late, they are more likely to respond with their own subway horror story.
