$200 MILLION ON FOOD IMPORTED TO VENEZUELA
Money wasted: $200 million
The Venezuelan government overpaid $206 million in six months on food imported from Mexico, a commission by the nation’s opposition-controlled congress found in June. Amidst food scarcity causing a spike in infant mortality rates, the government paid 55 percent above market prices for basic foods imported from abroad by middlemen, in a scheme the congress referred to as corrupt.
