THE NAVAJO HOUSING AUTHORITY (NHA)
Money wasted: $1.6 billion
In June, Sen. John McCain released a report confirming the wasteful failures of the Navajo Housing Authority, which received more than $1.6 billion in federal funds to provide housing for tribal members. Since 1998, the NHA has produced an average of 235 dwellings per year—spending in some cases as much as $1.1 million per home — while building up unspent reserves of nearly half-a-billion tax dollars.
