Who would have thought that from all the makeup products women use, mascara is the one that can promote bacterial growth the most?
If you bought your mascara tube one year ago, it has to go. According to the Food and Drug Association, mascara tubes should be thrown away every two to four months after opening, unless you want your eyes to be “ornated” with an infection instead of Hollywood eyelashes.
“Various microorganisms live on your facial skin, including your eyelids. That can include bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa” says Jacqueline R. Carrasco, M.D., F.A.C.S., an oculoplastic and orbital surgeon at Wills Eye Hospital. These attach themselves on the wand and wind up in the tube every time you insert the brush and then on your eyes when you apply the mascara.
