John Stith Pemberton, a pharmacist from Atlanta who had developed a serious morphine addiction, decided one day to invent a drug to help him kick the habit.
He came up with a syrup made from kola nut extract, caffeine, coca leaves, vegetable extracts and sugar. The syrup was sold as a medicine until one day a waiter experimented with diluting it in sparkling water. His invention proved popular, and Coca-Cola entered the trade register as an official brand on June 6, 1887.
