All of us, at some point in our lives, have played on the stairs with a large caterpillar-like coil. In 1943, Richard James, an American naval engineer, was developing large springs for transporting fragile instruments on boats. One spring escaped, and, as you’ve probably guessed, James watched it climb down the stairs! He found the sight quite amusing and decided to turn the idea into a toy.
