Taxes are used for a variety of different things, and they don’t always correlate to what is being taxed at all. In Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a city that was devastated by flood, that, a 10% tax was set on alcohol. This should have been a temporary jump since the money was used for necessary repairs.
But, as the title implies, the taxes ended up being not-so-temporary. The city was flooded in 1936 and repairs finished in 1942, but instead of getting rid of the tax, it has since increased to 18% since 1968.
Taxes on dirt may sound like a bit of a stretch, but these were put in place to ensure that industrial operations would pay their fair share. Makes sense, right?
Well, if any residents want to dig up their yards for any reason, they’re expected to pay for any cubic yards of the earth that they excavated.
Not only that, but even if you want to get rid of the dirt by giving it away for free, you’ll sill owe taxes on it.
