8 Must-Haves During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Nonperishable food items

Before it was declared a pandemic, the US Department of Homeland Security had already advised people to buy enough food and water for two weeks. Now that quarantine and social distancing are on the table, so to speak, stocking up on food has become a necessity.

“Dry goods like rice, pasta, beans, and oats should be the foundation of your stockpile,” says Alyssa Pike, a registered dietitian and manager of nutrition communications at the International Food Information Council.

Other foods that fit the nonperishable category are canned foods that contain liquid, such as tomatoes, beans, and tuna. You get to eat the content and use the extra liquid to prepare dried food like rice and pasta.

They might not be on the essentials list of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or of the US Department of Homeland Security, but every difficult situation requires some sort of comfort foods like chocolate, coffee and even ice cream. They can really turn the tide when it comes to your mental health and mood during a home quarantine.
