The queen conch is a large, quite majestic, edible mollusk. They could once be found in the Florida Keys in abundance, but their numbers decreased dramatically due to overfishing in the 1970s. The commercial or recreational harvest has been banned in Florida altogether, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as well as their trade and import across the territory of the United States.
Despite their ban, you can still find queen conch on the menu of specific restaurants as the United States accounts for the consumption of 80% of the world’s legally traded queen conch.
