Changing who you compare yourself to can increase your self-esteem. When you have low self-esteem, there is a tendency to compare yourself to people who, in your mind, are better off than you. This is called upward social comparison. People with high self-esteem tend to compare themselves with people who are in a worse situation – referred to as downward social comparison.
