5. They Tend to Give You One-word Answers
People tend to give one-word answers for two reasons, but they’re generally tied together. Firstly, maybe they simply don’t want to talk to you and aren’t interested in allowing the chat to build. After all, when you’re engrossed in a conversation, you tend to say more than ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘maybe’.
Secondly, they might think the questions you’re asking are downright rude. To further test if you’re the root of the problem or if the topic is giving them a hard time, try phrasing things differently. Adding a bit more compassion could help. Or, instead of going straight for the heavy hitters, take your time and build up to whatever it is you want to say or ask in the first place.
If the person you’re talking to hasn’t changed their attitude then take their short answers as a sign that they’re not interested in spending any more time with you. It’s time to reevaluate your friendship and how you might across.
