15 Stupid and Expensive Mistakes Home Buyers Make All the Time

Disregarding your credit

A good credit score can prove extremely useful in saving hundreds of dollars a month and thousands of dollars over the course of your mortgage loan. But, in order to benefit from the advantages of a strong credit, you need to make sure you solve all associated problems as early as possible before buying a home.

Start by asking for a credit report. Under federal law, you have the right to order one free copy of your credit report every year, from AnnualCreditReport.com. In April 2021, all three nationwide credit reporting companies, namely TransUnion, Equifax and Experian, are providing a free weekly online report to help Americans have a better understanding and manage their credits during the coronavirus pandemic.

If you notice any discrepancies or want to further clarify some aspects, don’t hesitate to contact the credit bureau. You might want to pay more attention to the following:

  • Inaccurate or outdated information
  • Wrong contact information
  • Accounts you didn’t open
  • Accounts you’ve already closed
  • Duplicate accounts

If you’ve changed your home address, you might still receive the utility bills at your old home, in which case you might still have a balance even if you’ve closed the account.
