Sassafras oil

Sassafras was commonly used in the manufacture of root beer and is also a main ingredient in teas. But The roots and barks of the sassafras tree include high amounts of a chemical called safrole, one of the main components of sassafras oil. Safrole is also used in the making of a designer drug called Ecstasy.

This chemical is on the FDA’s list of carcinogens in animals, which has prompted the agency to ban the use of sassafras oil in commercial food products.
