Sugar-free sugar

While developing a drug to treat ulcers in 1965, chemist J. Schlatter used aspartame to synthesize amino acids. When some of the aspartame powder got onto his finger, he discovered its sweet taste.
After doing some research, he found that aspartame stimulates the taste buds, causing a sugary sensation. He went on to market his discovery.
