If a $400 emergency popped up, 46 percent of people would struggle to pay for it, according to a 2016 survey by the Federal Reserve. A GOBankingRates survey found that 69 percent of Americans have less than $1,000 in savings.
A lot of people live on the brink of financial disaster, having little or no savings. So it only takes one unexpected expense, such as a major car repair or leaky roof, to push them over the edge.
